Randolph Mantooth’s lasting influence on fire service and EMS communities was born through his role as paramedic Johnny Gage on NBC’s hit television series “EMERGENCY!”. The show is widely credited with helping to both pioneer and popularize the then-nascent paramedic profession across the United States. Mantooth’s character was a key instrument educating the public and demonstrating to skeptical lawmakers that trained paramedics could deliver advanced life-saving care in the field.
Many EMS professionals cited “EMERGENCY!” as their inspiration for pursuing careers in fire and emergency medical services, and Mantooth’s portrayal helped humanize and dignify the profession at a time when prehospital care was still evolving. Mantooth remained a committed advocate to fire and EMS long after the show ended, frequently appearing at fire service conventions, EMS conferences, and tribute events, where he was embraced almost as an honorary member of the profession he helped popularize.
Within the vintage fire apparatus collecting community, Mantooth’s connection is closely tied to the show’s recognized and celebrated response vehicles, particularly Squad 51, the Dodge-based rescue squad truck featured prominently in “EMERGENCY!” Collectors and restorers who have preserved or replicated Squad 51’s, along with other apparatus reminiscent of the Los Angeles County Fire Department fleet from that era, often point to the show as sparking their interest in vintage fire trucks.
Mantooth’s willingness to attend musters, apparatus shows, and reunions—posing with restored squads and engines, sharing behind-the-scenes stories, and supporting preservation efforts—helped foster a wide and growing audience of people interested in antique fire apparatus. Randolph Mantooth’s personal involvement helped sustain interest in preserving the vehicular history of the fire service and the paramedic movement for past, current and even generations.
